Based on Eastern mystics, Hinduism, and paganism. Popularized in part by actress Shirley MacLane, 1980’s-90’s. Beliefs vary.

Writings

No holy book. Use selected Bible passages; I Ching; Hindu, Buddhist, and Taoist writings; Native American beliefs. Writings on astrology, mysticism, and magic.

Who is God?

Everything and everyone is God. God is an impersonal force or principle, not a person. People have unlimited inner power and need to discover it.

Who is Jesus?

Jesus is not the one true God. He is not a savior, but a spiritual model, and guru, and is now an “ascended master.” He was a New Ager who tapped into divine power in the same way that anyone can. Many believe he went east to India or Tibet and learned mystical truths. He did not rise physically, but “rose” into a higher spiritual realm.

Who is the Holy Spirit?
Sometimes a psychic force. Man is divine and can experience psychic phenomena such as contacting unearthly beings.

How to be saved.

Need to offset bad karma with good karma. Can tap into supernatural power through meditation, self-awareness, Transcendental Meditation ™, and “spirit guides.” Use terms such as “reborn” for this new self-awareness.

Can include yoga, meditation, visualization, astrology, channeling, hypnosis, trances, tarot card readings, and contact with spirits. Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and others by Hubbard

Who is God?
Does not define God or Supreme Being, but rejects biblical description of God. Everyone is a “thetan,” an immortal spirit with unlimited powers over its own universe, but not all are aware of this.

Writings

Spiritualist Manual, Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ, the Bible (selected portions), and others.
Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is not part of this belief. However, some say it is the spirit of a holy person who once lived.

How to be saved.

Knowledge and good works enhance one’s status in the afterlife.
What happens after death?

After life on this earthly plane, life continues in the spirit world, where one’s spirit may progress from one level to another. Heaven and hell are states of the mind.

Other beliefs or practices.

Seances to contact the dead. Psychic demonstrations. Church services with singing, music, sermon, spirit messages from the dead, and prophecies. May use ouija boards. Often attracts grieving people who hope for contact with a deceased loved one.

Unification Church

Founder

Founded by Sun Myung Moon. Founded in 1954 in South Korea. Current headquarters in New York City.

Writings

Divine Principle, by Sun Myung Moon. Outline of the Principle, Level 4, and the Bible (selected portions).

Who is God?

God is both positive and negative. God created the universe out of himself; the universe is God’s “body.” God does not know the future, is suffering, and needs man (Sun Myung Moon) to make Him happy. No Trinity.

Who is Jesus?

Jesus was a perfect man, not God. Not born of a virgin. His mission was to unite the Jews behind him, find a perfect bride, and begin a perfect family. The mission failed. The second coming of Christ is fulfilled in Sun Myung Moon, who will finish the mission.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is a female spirit who works with Jesus in the spirit world to lead people to Sun Myung Moon.

How to be saved.

Obedience to and acceptance of the True Parents (Moon and his wife) eliminates sin and results in perfection.

Having such a love for history I find myself looking at what people thought concerning the end of times and the coming of the Lord Jesus over the years.

Some though that Napoleon Bonaparte in 1813 was antichrist and since he was revealed as such, the Lord must be returning. Many were certain that last battle, Armegeddon, was about to take place in 1917 when the United States entered the great World War. The Kaiser was believe to be antichrist then. During WWII, many were looking for antichrist to appear and some thought he was revealed in the person of Adolf Hitler.

But even though we have seen as the Apostle John predicted many antichrists would come and were there at the time he worte 1st John: 1st John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 2:20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. all seem to forget there is something that is supposed to happen before antichrist appears.

There has to be a falling away. 2nd Thessalonians 2:1: Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
Now what's not exactly clear is that would this a great (complete) falling away or a partial. And what do you believe is mean't by falling away? I have other scripture to answer the question but wanted to hear from yall before I quoted & exponded on them.

Founded by Herbert W. Armstrong (died 1986). Founded in 1934 in Oregon. There are splinter groups. Main headquarters in Pasadena, California.

Writings

Monthly magazine, Plain Truth. TV program, The World Tomorrow. Assorted booklets, and the Bible.

Who is God?

One infinite, eternal God. Traditional Armstrongism denied a trinity, defining God as a “family of individuals.” Recently WWCG leaders have accepted a generally Trinitarian concept of God.

Who is Jesus?

Jesus is God incarnate (in human form). Armstrong suggested that Jesus would return to earth in 1975, but many church leaders today no longer support this teaching. Recent doctrinal changes include the belief that Jesus was raised from the dead spiritually and physically. However, some people still follow traditional Armstrong beliefs.
Beliefs about the Holy Spirit are also changing. Now view the Holy Spirit as personal rather than impersonal.

Founded by Charles Taze Russell, later Joseph F. Rutherford. Began in 1879 in Pennsylvania. Headquarters in Brooklyn, New York.

Writings

All current Watchtower publications, including the Bible (New World Translation only), Reasoning from the Scriptures, You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth. Watchtower and Awake! magazines.

Who is God?

One-person God, called Jehovah. No Trinity. Jesus is the first thing Jehovah created.

Who is Jesus?

Jesus is not God. Before he lived on earth, he was Michael, the archangel. Jehovah made the universe through him. On earth he was a man who lived a perfect life. After dying on a stake (not a cross), he was resurrected as a spirit, his body was destroyed. Jesus is not coming again; he “returned” invisibly in 1914 in spirit. Very soon, he and the angels will destroy all non-Jehovah’s Witnesses

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Holy spirit is not God, but rather an invisible, active force from God.

How to be saved.

Be baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses. Most followers must earn everlasting life on earth by “door-to-door work.” Salvation in heaven is limited to 144,000 “anointed ones.” This number is already reached.

What happens after death?

The 144,000 live as spirits in heaven. The rest of the righteous, “the great crowd,” live on earth, and must obey God perfectly for 1000 years or be annihilated.

Other beliefs or practices.
Known as the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Meet on Sundays in Kingdom Halls. Active members encouraged to distribute literature door-to-door. Once a year, Lord’s Evening Meal: only “anointed” ones may partake. Do not observe religious or secular holidays. Do not vote, salute the flag, work in the military, or accept blood transfusions. Believe Armageddon will occur soon.

I have found a leaflet that I picked up at a christian bookstore that gives a brief overview of the beliefs and backgrounds of some of the major cults and religions. I thought I would share them with you all. As you can see this first thread is on Mormons.

Mormons (Latter-Day Saints)

Founder

Founded by Joseph Smith, Jr. in 1830 in New York. In 1844 there was a split in the group. The LDS church has its headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Reorganized LDS church is headquartered in Missouri.

Writings

The main writings of the group are the Bible (selected portions or Smith’s version); The Book of Mormon; Doctrine and Covenants; Pearl of Great Price; and teachings of the Mormon prophets.

Who is God?

God was once a man, but became God. He has a physical body, as does his wife (Heavenly Mother). No Trinity. Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are three separate gods. Other gods exist also.

Who is Jesus?

Jesus is a separate god from the Father (Elohim). He was created as a spirit child by the Father and Mother in Heaven, and is the “elder brother” of all men and spirit beings. His body was created through sexual union between Elohim and Mary. Jesus was married. His death on the cross does not provide full atonement for all sin, but does provide everyone with resurrection.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Holy Ghost is a separate god. Holy Spirit is God’s influence

How to be saved.

Resurrected by grace, but saved (exalted to godhood) by works, including faith in church leaders, Mormon baptism, tithing, ordination, marriage, and temple rituals. No salvation outside of Mormon church.

What happens after death?

Eventually nearly everyone goes to one of the three levels of Heaven. Apostates and murders go to “outer darkness.”

Other beliefs or practices.

No alcohol, tobacco, coffee, or tea. Baptism on behalf of the dead. Two-year missionary commitment encouraged. Door-to-door evangelism. Secret rituals in the temple seen only by members in good standing. Belief that only humans may become gods. Extensive social network. Black African-Americans recently granted full access to Mormon church.

This is my 1st post, and when I saw Praise, this one seemed appropriate.
Yesterday, my husband Mark and I, visited w/Pastor Tim, who I had just met. My Spirit bore witness as soon as I laid eyes on him. That's so cool when it happens; anyway, Mark was on his way to a Dr.s appt. to find out about a melanoma cancer he was told about just last Thurs. Pastor Tim laid hands on Mark and prayed, and I also laid hands w/him (where 2 or 3 are gathered...). Then we proceeded to his appt. When we met w/the Dr. we were told there was only a less than 5% chance he had not got all the cancer out. He has to have one more out patient surgery to make sure, but WE praise GOD for his healing, because WE KNOW IT'S NOT THERE. Thank you JESUS!!
Please everyone, claim your healing and rebuke Satan when he comes at you w/these attacks, and also go and pray w/another believer, no matter whether you actually know him or not. When our spirits bear witness that says it all. Were in the same Beautiful Family. Thanks Pastor Tim............It was my pleasure!! Marsha
