Rabbi Thomas,
I really appreciate your taking the time to explain this. Your mention of His being tempted, with no thought of sinning, reminds me of a sermon the Youth Pastor at my church in 1978 - 1979 preached.
Rev. Johnny Faull said, "If temptation were sin, we would have no Savior because He was tempted and He sinned not."
Thank you, Gary, for the question, and thank you Rabbi for your awesome insight here. Obviously, the Scripture does refer to Jesus the Christ. I like to think of Jesus as described in Philippians 2:5-11. "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal iwth God, but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
SO what does that have to do with the current discussion? Simply this: that Jesus Christ, who was fully God and fully man, knew exactly who He was. He did it not consider it to be robbing God to say that He was equal to God, 'cause He is! He was the One prophesied by His Father in the Genesis scriptures Ditto mentioned. He was the only one who was ever perfect, the only one qualified to be our Savior. Yes, He defeated the devil, squashing his head when He rose from the dead to give us eternal life. Of course, we know that the devil is still alive and active, (unfortunately!), but his power is brought down! He has no final authority! We know who the Victor is, and it ain't the devil!
Does that mean that we, too, have that power to crush the devil? I have mixed thoughts here:
1. I don't think we are faultless as He was or that we can beat the devil on our own....NO WAY could that be true!
2. I do believe, however, that when we commit our lives to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, He does give us the ability to live holy lives pleasing to Him, not perfect in this lifetime, but mature.
3. I do also know that as Jesus was about to return to His Father, he gathered His disciples to a mountain and made one of the most significant statements ever: "All power is given to me in heaven and in earth". (Matthew 28:18). WOW! But that isn't the end: "Go ye therefore (in other words, in His power) and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghjost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever i have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always even unto the end of the world. Amen" (verses 19-20)
So, through an intimate personal relationship with Jesus Christ, we can grow in Him and find victory over the power of the devil as we learn more about the mind of the Savior. Perfect, no, but we can grow into mature, loving, witnessing believers!
One last thing: the battle (over sin) belongs to the Lord, and ONLY in His strength and power can we possibly have victory over it! I'm back again to where I began, by saying that we cannot crush the devil on our own, but we can rely on Him who has already found victory over the devil to help us overcome! But, again, that only comes as we, too, know who we are and humble ourselves as he did to come in total obedience to. . .
Him Who IS Love
